Teachers are leaving our district in herds…..Is it better to keep a bad teacher?
I’ve worked as a long-term sub at our local school in a couple different subjects… Both the Jr High and the High School. This year especially there have been several teachers resign. Working with the district I met some teachers that were excellent and some that were questionable and some that I would never want to teach my child.
The excellent teachers cared about the kids. They put in extra time despite the fact that there pay didn’t include being a social worker on the side, it didn’t even cover all their time spent teaching… I always hate hearing one of those teachers is leaving. One of my son’s is currently teaching and he’s that sort of teacher too. Letting the students come in and asking him questions when they need help, he’s genuinely glad to see the students when he happens to bump into them outside the school and they love seeing him.
Some teachers fall into the almost there category, but they have a hard time with some students. Sometimes it’s students that struggle, students that are different from themselves, or students that have a rough home life. I also know a few teachers like that. The students can tell when a teacher has favorites or doesn’t really ‘like’ them. Some of those students feel bullied or excluded. I even remember a teacher like that when I was in school. She was ‘everyone’s’ favorite….. She even coached a team I was on. At one point she called my mother wanting her to come get me because she didn’t want me to stay on the bus. Being undiagnosed ASD, I’m sure I was blunt and I know I had a really hard time socially. Now I hear about a friend’s son (ASD) that has a current teacher that was bullying him throughout his entire time in school. That teacher isn’t leaving…. on the other hand the student is transferring to another school to get away. How bad is it when a student moves schools to get away from a teacher that is participating in bullying?
In reality, we partly chose the school we chose because I didn’t want my son (2e, asd and gifted) to be exposed to at least one teacher that I had previously taught with. That teacher is now leaving to teach in greener pastures with more compensation. We are still going to stay at the school we changed too though that was more accepting. The teacher in question taught…
