Why Do We Even Need Math? Unraveling Its Importance Beyond the Basics
My husband likes to tell the story of how when one of the fast food giants tried to sell both a quarter pound burger and a third pound burger, the 1/4 pound burger sold better — why? Because people knew 4 is larger than 3. Because of the fear of fractions though, many people didn’t catch on that 1/3 is bigger than 1/4. You can picture a pie and divide it into 4 slices vs 3 slices. Which pie will have the larger slices? You can also do the division and find that 1/3 = .33 vs 1/4 = .25. Which is larger?
Math has frequently gotten a bad rap, viewed as tough, why do we need it, and just for geeks… Personally I find that I use small parts of math everyday. Everything from cooking, baking, crafts, budget, shopping, and working out how many hours I slept last night can all involve math.
